So I tried. I tried really hard to get the SpinCrystals product idea marketed to a company capable of making them and paying royalties. It didn’t happen. I had one large company very interested, Lifetime Brands, but they eventually decide that because there “was a pin in there” and that the crystal was “kind of flimsy” and, my favorite, that it “only worked when it hangs straight” they opted out. This was the kicker for me — all three of these are essential to the physics of a SpinCrystal. Oh, and I’m pretty sure that something which is balanced relative to the point from which it is hung will hang straight, but perhaps things are different in the world of Marketers and VPs of Sales?
So this site is back up, and I’m very happy to be returning to my simple little business of making and selling SpinCrystals. I have new designs and a sister site coming out soon too.
I have one new angle that I hadn’t before: IP protection. I had assumed that since I wasn’t able to get a company to file a patent application, that SpinCrystals would end up in the public domain: not the case. As it turns out, they can be protected as works of visual art under Copyright Law. I have an application for a copyright registration being processes under the name of SPINNING ORIGAMI CRYSTAL SCULPTURE. Check out OragamiUsa’s stance on copyright protection for Origami sculptures: here
Hope to have the new designs up and for sale soon!
